Tour de Sitia

I am always looking for the more unknown places in Lasithi, but there are also many touristic places that are definitely worth a visit. A good time to drive around and see those touristic places is after the Summer season ends and before the rains starts, or in Spring before the hot Summer starts. Then you can be almost alone in places that are normally (over)crowded. Crete is wonderful to visit any time of the year, but Spring and Autumn are the perfect times for driving around and for hiking. As there is already loads of information about some...

Maridaki beach

Maridaki is one of my favorite places to go, a little seaside village on the southern coast of Crete, west of Tsoutsouras. It’s a special place, remote and small, with an amazing beach and very relaxed feeling. Perfect for a great beach day! Maridaki lies in the Heraklion region on the south coast. It is not easy to get to, but the trip alone can already be worth going, because it is either a great boat trip or a drive through stunning landscape. The beautiful beach has smooth pebbles and crystal clear cool water, because of the stream of...

Dikti Mountains – Psari Madara

One of the most amazing places I’ve been in Lasithi is on top of the mountains, 2000 meters high, from where you can see the whole East side of Crete. Going up there is an adventure in itself, and once there you can only be in awe of the views on all sides. When I go there, I start very early in the morning, even before the sun is up, as it takes a while to get all the way up there and to see the sun rise over the mountains is magical! You can go up Dikti either...

Xerokambos is one of the most remote areas of Crete of the far east coast. I’ve been there in summer for swimming and relaxing, and in winter for hiking in the mountains with breathtaking views. You can get there from Makrygialos, and then drive inland and up to Ziros, passing a plateau (Armeni-Chandras) with vineyards, and continuing on a spectacular, winding road. Another way to get there is a 9km narrow road from Zakros, or following the coastal road after Makrygialos, and then up to Ziros. On another day I drove that road, which is also really nice, and...

Galini beach

A Greek friend gave me this tip for a small, quiet beach. Galini beach (or Achlia beach) is 15kms East of Ierapetra, in the green area of Schinokapsala. It’s a quiet cove with grey sand and amazing blue, calm waters. The beach is well protected from the wind and has many tamarisk trees to sit in the shade. There are umbrellas and sunbeds for rent, tavernas and showers. It lies between the (also very nice) beaches of Agia Fotia and Mavros Kolymbos in a little bay surrounded by cliffs and pine trees and is usually pretty quiet. Just before...
