A Greek friend gave me this tip for a small, quiet beach. Galini beach (or Achlia beach) is 15kms East of Ierapetra, in the green area of Schinokapsala. It’s a quiet cove with grey sand and amazing blue, calm waters.
The beach is well protected from the wind and has many tamarisk trees to sit in the shade. There are umbrellas and sunbeds for rent, tavernas and showers. It lies between the (also very nice) beaches of Agia Fotia and Mavros Kolymbos in a little bay surrounded by cliffs and pine trees and is usually pretty quiet. Just before you get to the beach, there is a little parking place on the right side of the road from where you can look down on the beach.
It looked really good from up there as you can see on the photo! Very blue water, sandy beach, almost no people and surrounded by rocks. The beach has a parking place right next to it. You have to pay for the sunbeds, but there is also a free part of the beach. The small, pine-wooded and quite wide gorge of Achlia ends at the beach, and makes for a nice walk. Very nice beach, and perfect for cooling down after visiting Agios Ioannis, Orino or walking the butterfly gorge.
How to get there:
Drive from Ierapetra, pass Ferma and Agia Fotia, and on the right side of the road, just before the road turns left, is a small parking area. From there you have a great view of the beach below. Drive down and park in front of the beach.
